Q. How low is the water this year in the marsh? I recently moved here and was planning on duck hunting Horicon this year with my boat, but I am concerned that there might not be water enough to use a boat yet?

A. I was on the marsh this week in a canoe. The water level was low. Some of the rock layers along the bottom of the Main Ditch were showing. The ditch that goes to Burnett was impassable to my canoe. You might want to contact the local staff of the DNR for recommendations on where to hunt on the marsh this year. We did receive a two inch rain on the night of September 21, 2005. I drove around the marsh after the rain but did not observe any change since my canoe trip. The lower part of the marsh has water in the ditches and the river channels. If we get a lot of rain from now until the season ends there might be a pretty good chance of good hunting on Horicon Marsh. The low water conditions this summer could have a positive effect upon the duck populations using the marsh. Food for ducks will grow up on the dry soil. In the fall these areas could be flooded and provide excellent waterfowl habitat. I would be glad to answer any questions that I can about the marsh. The DNR uses impoundments and water gates to control water levels on portions of the marsh. The DNR can give you an idea about the waterfowl hunt this season.
