QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THE HORICON MARSH

Q. My church camera club is planning on coming to the Marsh in the next month or so. I have pulled up the information from your web site, but have a few questions. How long is the guided hike on the boardwalk -- the distance that is? Also, we came a few years ago, and took a pontoon boat ride. I do not see any info on this. Is there such a thing?

A. The boardwalk on the north end of the National Wildlife Refuge section of the Horicon Marsh is less than one half mile long and completely handicap accessible. You can drive on the auto tour route to the start of the boardwalk. There is a parking lot which is also near the end of the looped boardwalk.

The boardwalk is a very nice walk if you want to learn about and photograph the Horicon Marsh, but there are many more places to see and learn from on the Federal and State sections of the Horicon Marsh. In close to 33,000 acres of photographic opportunities abound. Colors of the plants and animals almost speak to interested visitors.

The Pontoon Boat Ride which is located on what is called the Main Ditch is still in existence. The name of the tour service is "Blue Heron Landing". You can ride on pontoon boat up and down the Main Ditch which was dredged out of the marsh in order to drain the land for agricultural purposes near the turn of the century.

Weldon's Outdoor World can get you close to the real Horicon Marsh of post glacial times. We offer a full service tour of the Horicon Marsh and other places in Wisconsin. We can explain what you are seeing on a microscopic or ecosystem level. You make the request and I, Weldon Kunzeman, will do my best to show you Nature. Our motto is "Nature Tours With A Difference". Give me a call or email me about a tour for your photography club.
